Child's Adapted Tricycle Pedal Attachment: Special Needs Assistive Tool

This pair of child’s adapted tricycle pedal attachments are used to allow children with special needs, including cerebral palsy or other motor impairments, to use a tricycle or bicycle easily. These pedal attachments will work well for preschool-age and early elementary-age students, and the attachments are made for outdoor use in all elements and are long-lasting and durable. The attachments are bolted together around the typical bike or trike pedal. The child's foot stays in place with velcro straps. This listing is for a set of two pedal attachments with bolts, plastic heel cups, and velcro straps.

I handmake each of these pedal attachments from pieces of reinforced plywood. The plywood foot pads are 7 inches long by 3 inches wide and shaped to fit a child's foot. The bottom piece of plywood is approximately 5 inches long by 3 inches wide. All measurements are approximate as I handmake each item. I finish the plywood foot pads with polyurethane to make them easy to clean and durable.

Each pedal attachment includes a plastic heel cup that I make with a 3-D printer. Each standard heel cup is 2 inches high and surrounds the back of the foot pad. Elongated heel cups are longer on one side to assist with a foot that may turn in or turn out. Please choose which type of heel cup you'd like.

2 velcro straps are included for each foot pad (4 straps total) and can be cut to length. The pedal attachments also include wingnuts and two sets of bolts in different lengths (2.5" and 2") to attach the foot pads to a bicycle or tricycle pedal. If the hardware is too long and scrapes the ground, remove the existing bolts and replace with the shorter set provided.

For children who need additional length to reach the pedals, I also offer spacers starting in one inch increments. These spacers are made from plastic and are very light so they are easy to use. When your child grows, you can remove the spacers and continue to use the foot pedals. Spacers come with longer bolts and shorter bolts. Spacers are an additional cost per pair, starting with $10 for one inch. Send me a message if you have any questions about spacers, and see the photo for examples.

When attaching these pedals, be sure to tighten the wingnuts until the long carriage bolt sinks into the wood. The rounded top of the bolts will stick out slightly from the wood, but the square part of the top of the bolt should not stick out. When a child is wearing shoes, the rounded top of the bolt should not pose any issues. Please let me know if you have any questions about assembly.
