Cat’s have really special eyes, the vertical pupil enables the eye to respond way more than a human eye to changing light levels. With many cat species almost entirely nocturnal this is clearly a big advantage to them. The vertical nature of the pupil also gives cats a better perception of depth enabling them to really fine tune on a target.

Our challenge as an artist is to focus our own eyes on all that amazing detail in the cat’s eye. This is a larger than life study and for it to look as realistic as possible we really need to embrace all the subtle changes of colour, the little lines, marks and even the scenery reflected within the highlight! Take your time, really fine tune your colour mixes and use what you learn to hone your eyes and techniques. You will find the greater focus on the eye within this study should help you to look more closely at eyes within wildlife subjects you may subsequently paint.
