In February 2011 my wife and I were exploring in western New York State. We were headed to the town of Arcade when I took a wrong turn. We came around a bend in the road and saw these three deer standing on a little plateau. I stopped the car, my wife opened the car window and leaned back, and I photographed them through the open window, using a telephoto lens. There were three things that are not typical for photographing deer in western New York in the winter. First, the sun was shining relatively brightly. Second, the deer were relatively close. I often spotted deer on the far side of a large field; too far away to photograph even with a telephoto lens. Third, the deer stood still rather than immediately running away (as deer often do when a car stops on the road). They only held this wonderful pose for a short time, but it was enough to get this photograph
