I created this little watercolor painting in honor of one my favorite musicians and songwriters, and someone who is a great inspiration to me as an artist, Joanna Newsom. Her music has been the soundtrack to countless long hours spent painting, and in a way much of my art is infused with her spirit. I designed this painting like a tarot card because Joanna has an almost archetypal significance in my life—sort of like a Muse or a goddess of creativity in my own personal pantheon. To me, she symbolizes free, playful, spontaneous creative flow, alongside a careful, skillful attention to intricate detail that always strikes me as reminiscent of the handiwork of elves.
