HEREKE RUGS:
Hereke rugs are a type of handmade carpet that originated in the town of Hereke, located in the northwest of Turkey. The production of Hereke rugs began in the mid-19th century during the Ottoman Empire and continues to this day.
Hereke rugs are known for their exquisite craftsmanship and intricate designs, which often feature floral motifs, geometric patterns, and intricate medallions. They are made using high-quality materials, such as silk, wool, and cotton, and are known for their softness and durability.
One of the defining characteristics of Hereke rugs is their high knot density, which can range from 200 to over 1,000 knots per square inch. This results in a very fine and detailed design.
Hereke rugs are highly sought after by collectors and are considered to be one of the finest types of handmade carpets in the world. They can be quite expensive, and it can take months or even years to create a single rug.
WHO WE ARE?
Gallery Ararat was established by Burhan Kartal more than 40 years ago in Van/Turkey. Burhan Kartal is a well known and highly respected persona in rug business as well as in Kurdish society.
His ambition and passion on rugs helped him to build many friends all over the World and to form a collection with handpicked pieces from various regions and eras. His passion runs within the family as well so his son, Rohat, currently helps him to carry out his business.
On top of the rug business, Burhan has published two books in Turkish and Kurdish titled as "Bıruki Asireti ve Kinyas Kartal" and "Bir Nefes Bir Fikra Pekenok" where he focuses on sociological subjects.
His work and expertise on antique rugs have been also acknowledged and mentioned in books such as "An Introduction to Kurdish Rugs and Other Weavings" by William Eagleton and "Journey Through Kurdistan" by Marry Ann Bruni.
