Rosemaling is the traditional painted decorative folk art from Norway that began in the 1600's. Because of Norway's mountainous terrain and hundreds of valleys, the people of Norway had many dialects, native costume, traditions, ext. Norway also had a wealth of artisan traditions to draw from dating from the Viking era. When decorative painting styles reached Norway in the 1600's, it went into all this different areas and created over 15 different styles of Rosemaling, hence making it one of the most interesting folk arts to learn about and to paint. This style is traditionally painted on wood, but may be translated onto other surface areas.

This 12" tall Fjord horse is painting in the Telemark style of rosemaling, which is known for it's free flowing asymmetrical flow. This is a fun pattern that is great for both newcomers to rosemaling and for those who have been painting for quite a while. I painted this using Jo Sonja Acrylic paint by Chroma_Inc, but I have included the corresponding palette for oil paint.

The Wooden Fjord horse is 12" tall and 1.5" in width.
