Maypole (or Maibaum) is a 16th Century tradition especially strong in the villages of the Bavarian Alps where the raising
of the traditional maypole in the village square is a cause for celebration and is erected several weeks before May 1.

Young men from the villages try to steal the Malibaum. If a village manages to steal a Malibaum, the village that the Malibaum was stolen from invites the whole village of thieves to free beer and a festivity that takes place on May 1.

The Maibaum is usually painted in the Bavarian colours of white and blue and decorated with emblems depicting local crafts and industry.
