Basquiat calligram screen printed portrait measuring 1m x 70cm on mdf sealed board. On a base of gesso i have used layers of emulsion and acrylic with aerosol spray paint stencils before and after a black charcoal sketch was put onto screen and printed in acrylic process black . The text is from some found material that reads:

Basquiat claimed to have failed a life drawing class in the 9th grade and later managed to get kicked out of the progressive city school. But while there...he illustrated for the school paper.
His drawings, executed in a bright Peter Max style, sympathetically depicted the homeless and sarcastically mocked bourgeois values.
He later wrote that his first artistic ambition was to be a cartoonist. Al Diaz worked on the paper with Basquiat and soon after Bsquiats expulsion from high school they were soon collaborating on the graffiti assault of lower manhattan that would eventually bring Jean-Michel Basquiat his first taste of glory .Strange symbols and ominous and poetic messages in magic marker began appearing on soho walls in 1977.

In this multiple i have done a more classical portrait, i looked at some of the suits and colour combinations Basquiat wore, and for his flesh tone i used pastels to create a tweed effect using rudimentary sketched maps of new york in browns and ochres.
i think of this version of Basquiat as the worldly, refined and well-rounded teacher or professor of graffiti art and painting. The silver background really brings out the warmth in the other colours and adds a kind of industrial quality to the piece.
