Highlights

Looking for an approachable, skill-building puppet pattern?
The “Practice Puppet” is the design I use to create rehearsal and training puppets — ideal for learning TV puppetry, classroom settings, workshops, and auditions.

It’s intentionally straightforward and forgiving, making it perfect for builders who want to experiment, develop technique, and build confidence without the pressure of a fully bespoke character design.

WHY MAKERS LOVE IT
✅ Ideal for rehearsals, auditions & classroom use
✅ Great for beginners learning TV puppetry fundamentals
✅ Simple construction that still performs beautifully
✅ Includes optional eye plate for added facial control
✅ Updated to print easily on standard home paper
✅ Designed by an award-winning puppeteer and builder

WHAT’S INCLUDED
• Fabric patterns for body, arms/hands, and eyelids
• Foam pattern
• Mouth plate pattern
• Optional eye plate pattern
• Reference photos
• Helpful build tips and basic instructions

UPDATED PRINT FORMAT
This pattern has been revised for convenience and accessibility. It now prints on standard home printer paper with no scaling required. Some larger pieces will need to be taped together during assembly.

YOU’LL NEED
• Standard puppet-building supplies such as foam, fleece, glue, scissors, and thread.

NOTES (READ ME!)
(Because if it’s listed here, someone has definitely asked before 😄)
🧵 This is not a puppet — it’s a pattern to make a puppet.

🎥 Basic step-by-step instructions are included, but they are not comprehensive. YouTube is a great resource if you’re just getting started with puppet building.

very straightforward pattern, put together a puppet to practice using rods in a few hours. A little unclear on eye plate placement at first, but worked it out easily enough. Looking forward to making more of these little guys
