Easter is a sacred and symbolic holiday that resonates not just with the religious groups, but also all people regardless of their views. That’s because this day is associated with the warmth of one’s home, family traditions, joy and faith in true miracles. The brightest attributes of this holiday are, of course, Easter eggs (pysanky and krashanky). It’s interesting that paint-decorating eggs was our ancestors’ tradition long before Christianity. An egg was deemed a symbol of fertility and rebirth. Ornaments that were inserted on it also had deep symbolic meaning. Pysanky were always meant to be gifts for the loved ones, close friends, family members and the images used in decorative ornament expressed wishes and were supposed to be charms.
Our ancestors were very thorough in their approach to egg-decorating: only first eggs of young chicks were used as a base and preparing the ingredients for the paint could be compared to a sacral ritual. Nowadays many things changed. In order to make items more durable (an egg is a rather fragile material) artists use wood. Yet, the special significance of Easter egg (pysanka) remains intact: it is a sacred gift that we use to express our love, care and indifference.
