Screech Owls are one of the smallest of owls, and I've had the pleasure of
rescuing more than several. Most have recovered, an occasional one is found
by the roads. This is one, and her fragile skull was professionally cleaned at
the Natural History Museum in San Francisco by a friend who is a curator there.
I then have used her skull to make a latex mold, and over the years have made
literally Hundreds of castings for people to enjoy.

These little owls are quite prevalent along the Northern California coast where
I live, and hunt in the fields and meadows along the cliffs, that are rich with rodents.

The original skull is so light, so paper-like, it's hard to believe it's real.
The castings are a little fragile, although they'll do just fine with careful handling
and a safe display place.

This casting is about 1 1/2 inches across and 2 1/4 inches long with bill.
I made the original molds, and they are cast in hydrostone, a gypsum cement.
The acrylic washes and finishes add both the look of bone, and strength.
