If you're like me, your life revolves around a calendar. That's why teaching about the calendar and the months of the year are very important skills for young students. It is a skillset they will use their entire lives. You can use this handy poster as a reference tool. This MONTHS OF THE YEAR poster can be printed in 4 sizes: 8 x 10, 8.5 x 11, 11 x 17, and 16 x 20. The 8 x 10 size requires trimming. All other sizes do not require trimming.

Tips: *I am a retired preschool and K - 3 elementary school teacher and I do have experience teaching calendar skills.*

Start off by looking at a yearly calendar. Talk about how there are 12 months in an entire year and how a year starts in January and ends in December, then starts over again. Point out favorite days and holidays in each month and pay special attention to the birthday months of your students.

Your young students are probably starting to become aware of seasons, whether they notice a change in the weather or the different activities that take place at certain times of the year. When teaching the months, talk about the four seasons and how they happen during the same months each year. To help them make this connection, leaf through seasonal catalogs showing how people are dressed at different times of year and what activities and holidays occur in each season.

For several days, practice saying the names of the months in order. Sing this, "Months of The Year" song daily (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5enDRrWyXaw). Print out the 8 x 10 version and cut the months apart. Working in pairs or alone, see if your students can put the months back in order. Use the poster to check when finished. The following day, say a big wind just blew in (and toss the months in the air so they scatter). See if your students can put the months back in order again by singing the song as they go.

Use tape or sticky tac to place the month word names around the room. Call out the name of a month and everyone has to run and "tag" it. Once students have mastered this, bump it up a notch. Call out a holiday and students have to find the right month it is in and tag it. End the game with "find your birthday month" and students will scatter to different parts of the room. Do any students share the same birthday months?

Think up a body movement for each month. For example January could be snow falling, February could be making a heart with your hands, March could be dancing a jig, etc.
