Madagascan Ammonite Ring, Handmade in 925 Sterling Silver, Adjustable Band, Fine Fossil Gemstone Jewellery

Originating from Madagascar, this beautiful fossil ammonite is 120 million years old! It has been carefully prepared, cut in half and polished, then wrapped in a generous amount of 925 sterling silver with an adjustable band, to create this stunning statement ring!

This unique piece reveals the wonders of per-mineralisation and mineralization which take place over tens of thousands, even millions of years. Each inner chamber has been replaced with Calcite and Quartz. The colour and detail that remains is truly amazing.

Ammonites are an extinct group of predatory molluscs. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles and spiral shells. These marine animals first appeared 240 million years ago during the Permian period. They survived three mass extinctions and continued to roam the oceans right up until the end of the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago, when they finally disappeared along with the dinosaurs.
Though the shell resembles that of a Nautilus, they were more closely related to living colloids like Octopuses, Squids and Cuttlefish. The largest of all was found near Munster, Germany and has a diameter of 8 feet, 6 inches and weighs 3.5 tonnes! There was a wide variety of species, ranging in size, shape and colour.
