Milas is a small city in the southwest of Anatolia . The rugs produced here were already popular in the 18th century and European rug dealers discovered them in that period. In Europe at that period , it was a sign of nobility to own an oriental rug , even portraits were made in front of rugs. After 1985 the mass tourism increased in Turkey and the demand for the Milas carpets increased too. Those safran / tabacoo soft colors were very attractive for buyers.But the production was insufficient and expensive , so dealers started to order and produce similar pattern rugs for export/tourists in different cities. Unfortunately those new reproductions made with cheap wool and chemical colors have nothing to do compared to the old genuine ones. Most of the rugs today sold under the name of Milas are of those bad quality reproductions. My exemple is and old original Milas , made in Milas. This Milas carpet was offered / donated to a mosque long time ago , it still have the mosque's registration number at the back side. Today mosque's don't use anymore old rugs and they sell them at local auctions to replace them with wall-to-wall carpets. Contact me for further details .
