Jadeite is a naturally occurring green mineral, but it is also the name of a popular style of collectible mid-century glassware. Milky mint green jadeite dishes were inexpensive and often sold at hardware and five-and-dime stores. Jadeite plates, mugs, and platters were also produced for commercial use in hotels, hospitals, and restaurants. Sometimes small jadeite dishes were given as free gifts with the purchase of staples such as flour or oatmeal. Today, you can find both vintage and reproduction jadeite from sellers on Etsy.

A complete jadeite set can be costly and hard to come by, but you can get the look of a jadeite kitchenware collection with affordable reproduction jadeite or by purchasing a few vintage statement pieces at a time. Butter dishes, salt and pepper shakers, jadeite bowl sets, and jadeite glassware are popular ways to add a little mint green retro goodness to the dinner table.

While searching for the perfect vintage jadeite glass piece to add to your dinnerware set, look for the logo. Most vintage jade glass will be stamped on with the company’s name or symbol. Do a little research on the original makers and their logos, so that you can recognize the real deal when you find it. When in doubt, ask the seller for more information.

Remember, however, that vintage jadeite is not safe for the oven or microwave and should only be washed by hand. If you don’t want to baby your green dish set, search instead for a modern reproduction that can take the heat.
