From refreshing your look with new jewelry to getting your first nose piercing, choosing your nose ring hoop can be one of the most exciting parts of the process. There are many nose ring hoop types and materials to choose from, including:

  • Hinged hoop nose rings: If you’re someone who likes to change their style day-to-day or match jewelry to your outfit, try hinged hoops. Their hinge mechanisms are made to be inserted and removed easily while offering a wide range of styles to show off both side nostril and septum (the area between both nostrils) piercings.
  • Double hoop nose rings: While you could wear two, three, or as many rings as you can fit, double—and some triple—hoop nose rings are fashioned to fit through a single piercing but give the illusion of having more piercings.
  • Circular barbell nose rings: Circular barbell nose rings are also known as horseshoes. They’re among the most popular types of septum piercings, and they look great as side nostril piercings, too.
  • Captive bead nose rings: These are called captive bead rings because they capture a bead along the ring that remains fixed in place. Choose a stainless steel spherical bead to match most everyday looks or opt for something more eye-catching, like a spike bead ring.
  • Fake nose ring hoop: If your piercing has healed shut or you’re unable to get your nose pierced, you can still rock a nose ring by using a fake one. Fake doesn’t necessarily mean plastic—it can still be a gold hoop nose ring, sterling silver, or a diamond hoop. It just clips on or hugs your nose for easy accessorizing.

There are two considerations to take into account when finding a nose ring hoop size: the ring’s gauge and the inner diameter. The gauge refers to the thickness of the hoop, with a lower gauge number meaning a thicker nose ring. The inner diameter means the distance between one side of the hoop to another. Most people fall between a 5mm and 7mm diameter and work well with an 18-gauge hoop—although every nose is unique and your personal size preference may vary.

If you don’t remember previous hoop sizes that you liked or if this is your first nose ring hoop experience, you can determine the gauge by asking your piercer, who may use a micrometer, caliper, or gauge cards to size you. For the most accurate size, ask them to measure the inner diameter as well or, if you have your hoop already, you can calculate it at home. To do this, measure a straight line through the inside of the hoop from end to end by drawing a line on paper or tracing around the hoop and measuring the diameter for a close estimate.

You may come across other non-hoop nose rings to refresh your look and give you more options. These piercings have posts that are either straight, bent, or twisted that you often can anchor, with a shaped design or gemstone. These hoop alternatives are among the most popular nose ring types:

  • Labrets: This is a threadless jewelry type you can wear for a long time or frequently change out. They consist of two parts—the post and a small pin with an end—that snap together, giving them another name: press-fit. You can use the same post and switch out the end pins to wear a bold gemstone today and a delicate leaf design tomorrow.
  • L-bends: Named for their distinct pre-bent “L” shape, these fit snugly on your nose to show off your favorite stud.
  • Nosebones: Nosebones are straight bars similar to threadless jewelry like labrets, except they use a slightly thicker ball on the end instead of a backing post to keep them from falling out.
  • Nose screws: Among the most popular for first-time nose piercings, nose screws are pre-bent but often can be bent further to shape your nose if necessary. Once your piercing is healed fully, you can switch them out regularly to spruce up outfits and update your style.
