While wooden dollhouses are often associated with children, many dollhouses also have great features, gender neutrality, and high levels of sophistication that can appeal to adults as well. Miniaturists—those who create small-scale life scenes and replicas using miniatures—around the world enjoy the artform and find joy in expressing artistic skill and creativity. With a wood dollhouse, anyone can replicate their own miniature life or escape reality by diving into a world of their own creation.

Giving someone a wooden dollhouse can bring joy, so take these factors into consideration to help you find the perfect dollhouse:

  • The purpose of the dollhouse: Is the wooden dollhouse for a passionate collector, a meticulous artist, or a playful child? Who is receiving it and what they will use it for will determine if you want an intricate, paintable house with a slew of small pieces or a barebones playhouse that can adapt and change with the owner’s creativity.
  • Preassembled or build your own: Some wooden dollhouses come preassembled, ready to be filled with miniature furniture and figures, while others require some construction. If the house is built from the ground up, consider a complete wooden dollhouse kit that comes with precut pieces to assemble and decorate.
  • Dollhouse size: Each dollhouse will have a scale ratio attached, so double-check that your gift as well as any miniature accessories and figurines you may wish to include are the appropriate sizes.
  • Dollhouse style: Wooden dollhouses can be grand Victorian mansions with peaked roofs and fine clapboard siding, while others can be blank canvases with minimal detailing that you can transform over time. Some are more stylized to tell a medieval fairytale, while others can be very modern. Most popular dollhouses have a closed backing to help create a scene, but others remain open all around to be accessed from all sides.
  • Durability and construction material: Your chosen dollhouse may need to stand up to abuse when a monster attacks it or when dolls jump playfully along the floor. In this case, you may want to choose a durable hardwood such as oak or maple. If the dollhouse is primarily for display, a softer wood such as pine is usually thinner, lighter, and easier to modify if you want.
  • Portability: Displays are unlikely to move much from a single location, but dollhouses for kids may travel from room to room or all the way to Grandma's house. Consider portability so your dollhouse doesn’t face demolition every time you move it by choosing one with carrying handles, study construction, and lighter—though durable—wood types such as plywood.

Dollhouse ratios refer to the proportion between the house and real life, and come in many standard sizes, including 1:6, 1:12, 1:16, 1:24, and 1:48 or in custom sizes. The first number means 1 inch inside the house will be the same as the number of inches the second number is in real life. A 1:12 for example, is called a 1-foot scale because 1 foot—or 12 inches—in real life would be 1 inch in dollhouse land. An 8-foot entryway in real life would be 8 inches inside the house in 1:12 scale—but only 4 inches high in 1:24.

As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the second number, the smaller the house will be, so aim for around a 1:6 or 1:12 for most play dollhouses and 1:24, 1:48, and so on for model miniature work.
