TIMELESS BEAUTY!

FINE PORCELAIN!

Illustrated is a Japanese iconic symbol of autumn/winter - Ripe Persimmons! The orange-red "akae" color is another perfected hue by Fukagawa sei! This is orange/red enamel that is over glaze. The 3 fruits with their red skin and tan/brown stalk and sepal are very "Rockwell"...ha! The leaves are contrasting with their top cobalt blue and sky-blue unders. There's even a spot where insects have chewed away parts of the leaves! These plates have a nice 1/4" rim and of course would be a perfect way for dinner guests to eat sushi or sashimi with. Would work as an appetizer plate, salad or dessert plate also. To be honest, would also work as entree plate if you were serving teppan style :-) There's two sets available for separate purchase. (these are heavy/sturdy plates)

This is my favorite palette...cobalt blue! This is a royal/rich true cobalt...not the over exported dark navy blue palette that inundated the US market back in the 60's and featured machine/transferware patterns!
This is "Fukagawa Blue"...they so perfected the cobalt hue that collectors have named it after them! This vase will certainly draw the eye with its exquisite cobalt and gilded rim!

Japanese Symbolism > Permissions are equated with VICTORY!

Fukagawa porcelain since their inception, are prized objects de art! They're collected, given as gifts for weddings, anniversaries and vip corporate gifts and treasured down the generations!

MARK - PIC 4b > stylized Mt. Fuji with two streams logo and 3 Japanese characters >

= FUKA GAWA SEI (Shenzhen-made)
- underglaze Fukagawa Sei mark may have been used since 1920, there's some disagreement on this, mark is still in use currently.
- It lacks the silver and blue tag/decal with their logo and JAPAN per the McKinley Tariff Act requirement for imports, leading me to believe these were not exported, but rather purchased in Japan and at some time made its way to the US where I acquired them. (the paulownia box it came in has a Japanese Department Store decal on it) (older pieces would have a simple paper sticker "Japan")
- Something I've never seen before (seems to be a thing of late for me & Fukagawa/Koransha, ha!)...below the characters for Fuka Gawa Sei...is an underglaze stamped/incised character! Looking at it, I believe it to be a repeat of the first blue character 深 "Fuka."

SPECS- about 8.375"L x 5.5"W x .875"H

CONDITION - Outstanding!
- appears as new, I see no signs of them ever being used, no scratches to the glaze, no utensil marks, even the unglazed foot ring only bears slight signs of being displayed.
- if you desire the paulownia wood box they came in, please let me know
- there isn't any printed matter/pamphlets in the box

MY SUBJECTIVE GRADING GUIDE >

Outstanding - pristine, like new
Excellent - excellent as it's antique/vintage (minor issues)
Good - moderate issues
Fair - more than moderate issues, okay for display, but not a prized piece
Poor - major issues = deserving of a continued existence

KORANSHA INFO >
1689 - Matasiro Fukagawa ( founder Eizaemon Fukagawa ) started to manufacture pottery in Arita.
1870 - By the command of the Ministry of telegraphic communication, the 8th Eizaemon Fukagawa succeeded in manufacture of the insulator for telegraphic communication first in Japan.
1875 - "KORANSHA" Scented Orchid Company was established by Ezaiemon Fukagawa with his partners. When those partners left, Ezaiemon Fukagawa reorganized the company.
1876 - Koransha upon exhibition at World Expos beginning at the Philadelphia Expo, won recognition and awards.
1896 - Appointed to supply pottery by the Imperial Household Ministry.

Upon his death, his eldest son Yotaro inherited while his second son established the FUKAGAWA PORCELAIN COMPANY - 1894.

FUKAGAWA INFO > 1894 - present
1900 - Paris Exposition - awarded the gold medal for large vase
1910 - appointed "Purveyor to the Imperial Household"
1916 - becomes the Japan Navy designated factories, to deliver the Western Tableware (up to 1918)
1947 - it had delivered the tableware in the United States Navy central purchasing office, further to receive the orders were mainly a dinner set

These two companies on occasion produced similar/almost exact patterns. I use on a daily basis two early rice bowls depicting an "aralia" pattern. Same except that Fukagawa depicts 6 red berries both inside/outside the bowl and the Ko Ran Sha 5 inside the bowl and 7 on the exterior. Slight difference in size and and thinness of porcelain. Both companies exist today and still do hand painted wares that sell for thousands of dollars. Both companies also manufacture electrical ceramic items. Both companies continue to win porcelain awards both domestically and worldwide. Their early popularity in Europe led to their success.

I'm not an expert on Porcelain. The information above is based on my research as a collector. It's time to downsize and find an appreciative home for this exquisite piece!
