Samantha Kemarre Morgan is a talented artist from
the famous Aboriginal artist community of Utopia (350km north east of Alice Springs). Samantha is the niece of the renowned, late Gloria Petyarre and has been influenced by her aunty who passed down the sacred Dreamtime stories of the ‘Mountain Devil Dreaming’ to her. The painting depicts the curling pattern of the Mountain Devil Lizard's skin. In the Aboriginal Dream-time Stories it is believed the lizard collected then deposited these colours throughout the Atnangkere country, Utopia in Central Australia. Mountain Devil, also known as the Thorny Devil passes through night and through day, it changes colour. It is black at night and as the dawn breaks it changes colour. As the sun rises it becomes brighter, the devil changes colour to yellow. The colour changes aid the devil being undetected. The stunning movement created on the canvas by Samantha in combination with her beautiful use of colour is just one of the reason why the artist’s work is so highly sought after.
