Aeonium Schwarzkopf

The black rose, Aeonium arboreum var. atropurpureum f. nigrum cv. Schwarzkopf (Zwartkop), is a branching succulent shrub that produces magnificent, shiny black-purple, leaf rosettes at the ends of its branches. It reacts to sunlight, and the stronger the sunlight, the blacker it becomes. It really is quite extraordinary. It's fleshy, but then if you touch it to break the end of the leaf, it feels almost like plastic. It produces golden pyramids of flowers in late spring.

You can choose to order rooted plants or cuttings. Rooted plants are shipped bare root (no pot, minimum soil). Roots are trimmed to aid recovery from shipping/replanting shock. Cuttings are clippings of the tips/offsets of a plant and are never rooted. Most cuttings do not have roots developed. You will receive a plant similar to the pictures.

We try to maintain short stems for rooted plants, as long stems may appear leggy to some people. This is only personal taste, so if you prefer long stems or tall plants, please message us before purchasing, to make sure long stems are available.

Cutting size is measured either across the rosette when wide open (for single rosette cuttings) or overall length (for multiheaded cuttings or upright cuttings), whichever is larger. Cuttings may have short stems that do not stick out, which will NOT affect rooting.

Aeonium care: Aeoniums are drought tolerant when established and requires well-draining soil. They are summer dormant meaning they remain the same size without much growth during summer. They require full sun (unfiltered sunlight for at least 6 hrs a day) or part sun (4 hrs sunlight per day) locations for best results. Water thoroughly and allow to dry before watering again. Protect from frost.
