Welcome to my Etsy site! My name is Marcie Roepke-Applegate and Flybird Designs is my business name. It encompasses many artistic creations but I will feature handcrafted jewelry on here for now.

Born and raised in the Youngstown, Ohio, USA area, my academic studies started at Columbus College of Art & Design and finished with a BFA from Youngstown State University in General Studio Art.

My work is created at my studio in the old Ward Bakery building in the Mahoning Commons District of Youngstown. I participate in many local and regional exhibitions and sell my work throughout the year at various art festivals and fine art shows. A few local galleries and shops carry my work, also. I offer classes in metal clay and host various jewelry workshops in my studio.

I have collaborated with Lynn Cardwell of LynnCardwellPottery.etsy.com on local public art projects. We created a 7 foot penguin covered in hand-cut mirrors for YSU's Penguin Parade project. "Stella" now resides in San Leandro, California. Our current project is a 6 foot tall by 8 foot long Goddess of Speed designed from a Packard automobile hood ornament. The art deco styled Goddess is covered in silver and colored mirrors, with some areas painted in a metallic gold. It was auctioned off in October and will be going to a new home in Utah.

My jewelry consists of a variety of materials - from silver, bronze and copper clay, other metals, found objects, fused glass, and semi-precious stones. I enjoy working with organic textures and complex forms yet I also love the simplicity of some designs. No two items are identical. Some may be similar to one another. All designs are original.

METAL CLAY

Comprised of metal particles, a non-toxic binding material and water. The binders vaporize in a firing process leaving a pure metal. The metal clay can be rolled, formed, sculpted, stamped and manipulated and even carved in its dry state. After firing it can be sawn, drilled, enameled, soldered and patinaed using traditional jewelry tools and techniques.

I use silver, bronze and copper metal clays in my jewelry creations. Because this medium lends itself to enhancing organic textures, nature is a prominent theme in my work.

All work is created in a smoke-free environment.

Purchases usually shipped in 2-7 business days after receipt of payment. I ship to PayPal addresses. All jewelry shipped USPS First Class Mail with delivery confirmation. Orders outside of the USA are sent via First Class International with customs tracking. I will insure all orders over $50 for free.
