A New Leaf on Life
Like so many people facing the uncertainties of the pandemic, I retired early. Within two months of a hasty decision, I found myself leading a life of leisure. Greeting the day without the blare of an alarm was a welcomed change, but then what? I was without a job, without purpose, without what had defined me for the past thirty years. I was lost and adrift – totally unprepared for whatever lay ahead. I went to my local library to ponder my future.
What I found on my way to the isle of my favorite mystery author was a cart of unwanted used books the library was selling. Many of the books were extremely dated and had outlived their usefulness. "Much like yourself," a nagging little voice inside my head reminded me. I did my best not to dwell on the subject and instead wondered what would become of the books – their future wasn’t looking too promising. I had counted books among my friends and found solace in their pages for as long as I could remember. Certainly they deserved better than a trip to the recycling bin. Then I remembered a Pinterest post I had seen about repurposing used books. So it began, my quest to save unwanted used books from a dubious future.
I truly enjoy the time I spend giving books new purpose and meaning by turning them into little works of art because, through the pages of my old friends, I’ve discovered a new leaf on life
