Weekends, Coffee, & Regattas
The first year my daughter rowed, it was like everyone was speaking a foreign language and it was hard to keep up with conversations with the other Moms. It was weird at first hearing people occasionally talk about their Cox (short for “Coxswain”) and it made me naturally asked a lot of questions and eventually began to understand Crew jargon. The first regatta I attended kind of took me by surprise. I didn’t expect I’d have to get up so early on the weekend to be at the boathouse hours before first race, before the crack of dawn. Well, my mistake was I had a small ½ calf and didn’t eat any breakfast. Didn’t have a repeat of that.
At every regatta I cheered so loud I was still hoarse 2 days later. I asked my daughter if she could hear me, she said she could hear the screaming crowd, but my voice didn’t stand out to her. I didn’t care, I feel like my loud screaming reached her every stroke motivating her to the finish line. The other Moms and I enjoyed conversations, distributing snacks, and becoming friends as we supported our children during practices and regattas.
My daughter really enjoyed rowing. Although she was editor of her school’s newspaper and played in advanced orchestra, I thought Crew was her favorite because of her social interactions, the traveling, and doing physical activity. So naturally I started compiling a list of College Crew Teams hoping she’d want to row on the collegiate level. I was mistaken, she wanted to explore other activities. Apparently, I was the one that didn’t want Crew to come to an end. Hence, CrewMoms.com was born and here I am today still enjoying Weekends, Coffee, and Regattas.
