Le collectif Hold Fast a été créé en 2016 dans le but de poursuivre l’une des plus anciennes traditions militaires de création de certificats qui racontent les histoires de l’endroit où nous avons été, des choses que nous avons faites et des actions de ceux qui nous ont précédés. Le collectif Hold Fast s’engage à embrasser le patrimoine, la tradition et la fierté de l’unité en créant des certificats qui deviendront une tradition durable de l’unité et de l’histoire de l’individu. Que ce soit dans votre bureau au travail ou dans le couloir à la maison, ces certificats sont destinés à rappeler l’histoire dont nous faisons maintenant partie.
L’expression « Hold Fast » remonte à des marins norvégiens et néerlandais qui avaient le dicton « houd vast » signifiant « hold tight ». À la première impression, le sens de tenir ferme semble évident, mais pour un marin, « rapide » est un terme signifiant faire serré. Si un marin devait accélérer la ligne, cela signifierait serrer la corde. Les marins étant un groupe superstitieux ont commencé à tatouer « tenir bon » sur les quatre doigts orientés vers l’avant de chaque main. Cela a été fait pour la chance tout en tenant les lignes et pour rappeler que quoi qu’il arrive, le marin ne lâcherait rien.
Chaque succursale change et chaque unité s’efforce de répondre à de nouvelles demandes. Nous ferons face à de nouveaux défis, créerons de nouvelles traditions et écrirons le prochain chapitre de l’histoire de chaque branche. La mission de The Hold Fast Collective est de s’accrocher à l’histoire et à la tradition, de se souvenir de notre héritage et de créer de nouvelles traditions qui seront là pour rappeler à la prochaine génération leur passé.
The Hold Fast Collective was established in 2016 with the purpose of continuing one of the military’s oldest traditions of creating certificates that tell the stories of where we have been, the things we have done, and the actions of those who have gone before us. The Hold Fast Collective is committed to embracing heritage, tradition, and unit pride by creating certificates that will become a lasting tradition of the unit and the individual’s story. Whether it’s in your office at work or in the hallway at home, these certificates are meant to be a reminder of the history that we are now a part of.
The phrase “Hold Fast” traces back to Norwegian and Dutch sailors who had the saying “houd vast” meaning “hold tight”. Upon first impression, the meaning of hold fast seems obvious, but to a sailor, “fast” is a term meaning to make tight. If a sailor was to make fast the line, it would mean to make the rope tight. Sailors being a superstitious group began to tattoo “hold fast” on the four front-facing fingers of each hand. This was done for good luck while holding the lines and as a reminder that no matter what, the sailor would not let go.
Every branch is changing and every unit is striving to meet new demands. We will face new challenges, create new traditions, and write the next chapter in each branches history. It is the mission of The Hold Fast Collective to hold tight to history and tradition, remember our heritage, and create new traditions the will be around to remind the next generation of their past.
