God's Plans Are So Much Greater Than Mine!
I thought when I graduated from high school that I was going to college to become a nurse. Little did I know, God had another plan.
While I was taking classes at a community college, I worked at a local Kinko's. One day, I watched as our typesetter (now I'm dating myself) began to work on her little Mac. I was amazed by the things she could create on her computer. Up until this point, the way I had seen people create flyers was by copying clipart and then literally "pasting" it on the sheet of paper to be copied. Once I saw what she could do, I decided to spend time watching her design. She taught me lots of tricks, and before I knew it, I was also clicking away on the computer trying to do some of the things she was doing.
By the time I realized that I had a true passion for graphic design, it was never the right time to go back to school. I had gotten married, and had 2 very busy little boys. It wasn't feasible for me to go to college….I needed to work to help provide for my family.
So let me tell you what God did: He provided an amazing job opportunity for me to learn all the basics of design while working on the job. Yes, that's right…. I worked alongside of highly educated and super-talented artists! They really took me under their wing and helped me improve my design skills. After working 10 years in Christian non-profit organization, God revealed a new plan to me: He began tugging at my heart to quit my job. He "spoke" to me in such a way that I couldn't ignore it. He just said, "Trust me." I felt like Abraham…I had no plan … no details…..no clients lined up…no idea what God wanted to do with me next. I just knew this heavy burden wouldn't go away. So I did it….I just listened and obeyed.
When I left my job, finances were tight, but God always provided. I picked up a few freelance design projects, but still had lots of time on my hands. "Why in the world would God ask me to quit my job?"…I struggled with this but continued to pray each time I was faced with questions and doubt.
One day, a good friend of mine was remembering the prayer journal I had designed for her years ago. She suggested I offer my journals online in an Etsy store. I wrestled with the idea, but had no confidence that I could do it. There were several key people in my life who supported me and "cheered" me on. I would have never made that first step if it wasn't for them. After a few months, I finally got my shop all set up and began selling the prayer journals that were near and dear to my heart.
Then guess what God did? Once I was up and running my Etsy Shop, I was offered a part-time position with Operation Blessing International. I now have the best of both worlds….I am able to work part-time for an amazing organization with the stability of a consistent schedule, and still do what I love best….creating journals with hopes of encouraging other people in their prayer lives. Yeah GOD!!
God's plan is so much greater than mine. I am so encouraged when I hear how people have learned to experience God in a whole new way, just by seeing their answered prayers in their journals! What will God do next?…. I can't wait to see what He has up His sleeve!
