Custom Watercolors with a Wink of Whimsy
Mi camino hacia una vida como artista profesional comenzó en la universidad, aunque en aquel entonces no lo sabía. Asistí a Colby College en Waterville, Maine, donde estudié inglés, escritura creativa y arte (¡ah, y también conocí a mi actual esposo!). Me enamoré del Departamento de Arte de Colby y finalmente me especialicé en Grabado, lo que me valió el primer premio en nuestra exposición de arte de fin de carrera hacia el final de mi estancia allí.
Después de la universidad, comencé mi carrera en la industria editorial. Tras una breve estancia en Nueva York, trabajé durante cinco años en Bedford St. Martin's en Boston, primero como editora de Historia y luego como editora de Literatura y Lectura Inglesa. No fue hasta que Rob y yo nos comprometimos en 2019 que realmente volví a integrar el arte en mi vida. Con el deseo de crear algo totalmente único para la papelería de mi boda, comencé a aprender caligrafía, acuarelas y algunas técnicas básicas de diseño gráfico para diseñar las tarjetas de invitación y, finalmente, las invitaciones. 2019 se convirtió en 2020 y, bueno, ya saben lo que pasó. Una boda pospuesta significó otra ronda de tarjetas de invitación, otra ronda de invitaciones y mucha práctica adicional para mí. Y durante ese tiempo, muchas cosas cambiaron. Para cuando nuestra boda se celebró en agosto de 2021, había dejado mi trabajo y estaba diseñando para otras parejas, ¡igual que ahora!
Lo que más me gusta de mi trabajo, ya sea diseñar para parejas, ilustrar para marcas o publicaciones, o crear un regalo personalizado único, es que puedo aprovechar mi creatividad para crear algo totalmente único que no solo es hermoso, sino que también cuenta una historia. ¡Después de todo, estudié inglés! Cuando no estoy perdida en una caja de pinturas o garabateando en mi cuaderno de bocetos, me encontrarás acurrucada con mis cachorros, Ernie y Stevie, disfrutando de una copa de vino y unas deliciosas tapas con una querida amiga, o deslizándome un fin de semana (¡o más!) con mi esposo.
My journey toward a life as a professional artist began when I was in college, although I didn’t know it at the time. I attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where I studied English, Creative Writing, and Art (oh, and met my now-husband, too!). I fell in love with the Art Department at Colby, eventually focusing in on Printmaking, which won me the top prize at our senior art show toward the end of my time there.
After college, I began my career in the publishing industry. After a brief stint in New York City, I spent five years working at Bedford St. Martin's in Boston, first as a History editor, then an English Readers and Literature editor. It wasn't until Rob and I got engaged in 2019 that I really introduced art back into my life. Wanting to create something entirely unique for my own wedding stationery, I began learning calligraphy, watercolors, and some basic graphic design skills to design the Save the Dates, and eventual Invitations, for my own wedding. 2019 turned into 2020 and, well, you know what happened. A postponed wedding meant another round of Save the Dates, another round of Invitations, and plenty additional practice for me! And during that time, a lot changed. By the time our wedding actually took place in August of 2021, I had quit my job and was designing for other couples, just like I am now!
My favorite part of my job, whether it's designing for couples, illustrating for brands or publications, or creating a one-of-a-kind custom gift, is that I get to harness my creativity to create something totally unique that is not only beautiful, but tells a story. I was an English major, after all! When I'm not lost in a box of paints or scribbling in my sketchbook, you’ll find me snuggling with my pups, Ernie and Stevie, enjoying a glass of wine and some delicious apps with a dear friend, or jetting off for a weekend (or more!) with my husband!
