Revolution. Some hear this word, and it brings to mind destructive images--mobs of angry faces, effigies strung up, fires burning in the streets, rocks smashing windows.
But revolutions are about more than simply tearing down the old; they're about building something new, striking out in a new direction, empowering the disempowered. They’re about leaving a safe and secure job with a pension and benefits in order to tackle something completely different--becoming self-employed and self-governed while building a new and independently-driven vision with like-minded individuals.
In 2013, Blazer Arts experienced its own revolution. The business first came to life in 2006. After three years of success on the art show circuit followed by three more on Etsy with the development of four separate shops: Blazer Arts, Blazer Studios, Happily Ever After, and Sprouts by Blazer Arts; a fifth shop was added to the Blazer Arts family: The Revolution.
Along with this new shop, there came new faces, new collaborators. In the fall of 2013, my brother-in-law walked away from a 15 year long career, working in a steel mill, to join our ranks. His skills with metalworking quickly translated from large scale steel to our small scale precious metals. He’s a natural. My mother-in-law, a retired kindergarten teacher, also joined us part time as our quality control and “packer and slapper.” (She came up with her own title.)
In the summer of 2014, after ten years of teaching college composition courses, I officially joined Blazer Arts, though I’ve been along for the ride from the start. While it gave me great pride to help students develop and craft their own voice in academic writing, given the ongoing growth and stability of our business, I could no longer stand on the sidelines. Now Blazer Arts is truly a family business. We have since added a sixth shop to the Blazer Arts Family: In My Life by Blazer Arts. It opened on April 28th, 2015--our 14th wedding anniversary.
