SoFlyPNW started with a Christmas surprise and an intimidating camera. A few years ago, my husband gifted me a Nikon 3500 DSLR bundle, and I knew almost nothing about photography. I’d always admired other people’s crisp, detailed images and secretly hoped that one day I’d be able to capture moments with that same clarity.
What began as a gift under the tree has grown into a full‑blown family hobby and a way of seeing the world. As I reluctantly joined my husband on hikes, I found myself completely captivated by the birds and wildlife appearing in my viewfinder. Soon, weekend walks turned into scavenger hunts for feathered neighbors, new parks, and hidden pockets of nature. My husband, Adriaan, usually walks ahead as the spotter with his binoculars, while our kids keep a sharp eye on the creatures closer to the ground.
We picked up this hobby during some very chaotic years. Living through a global pandemic, birding and photography became our way to slow down, reconnect, and remember what matters most. Getting outside helped us move our bodies, quiet the noise, and treat each walk like a moving meditation. It gave us permission to explore, to be curious, and to see our surroundings with fresh eyes.
SoFlyPNW is our family experiment and our love letter to the Pacific Northwest. For us, “so fly” is a whole mood: it’s the feeling of creative expression, time with family, wild places, and those little moments that make your heart soar. Through our digital images, we’re excited to share the birds, animals, and landscapes that have brought us so much joy and calm.
We are not expert naturalists, photographers, or even expert birders—just a family learning as we go. This shop is an invitation to come along for the adventure, to bring a bit of that curiosity and quiet wonder into your own home, and to see what makes you feel so fly.
