The Story Behind Sugar Lane:
Sugar Lane was founded in 2009 by Sara Arnal Risueño after a life-changing trip to India. There, she discovered a world of rich textiles and vibrant colors, falling in love with the beautiful silks wrapped around Indian women bodies. But it was the discovery that many women kept vast collections of vintage saris hidden in their closets that truly inspired Sara. She knew these precious fabrics deserved a second life—and thus, Sugar Lane was born.
The Silk:
Indian silk is renowned for its stunning colors, textures, and traditional craftsmanship. Each region of India offers its own unique type of sari, with varying patterns and weaving techniques. Sara’s journey to bring these fabrics to life begins with sourcing well-preserved vintage saris from iconic regions like Kolkata, Kanchipuram, and Maharashtra. Because silk is in limited supply and each sari has its own story, finding the perfect piece is an exciting challenge—but one that ensures every creation is truly one-of-a-kind.
The Design:
Each sari tells a story—and this story becomes the heart of every design. After carefully selecting the finest silks and passing them through quality checks, Sara organizes the fabrics into groups to begin the creative process. Whether it's using crisp Khadi silk for structured robes, floral prints for light scarves, or intricate brocades for glamorous jackets, each piece of fabric inspires its own design. This approach ensures that every Sugar Lane creation is not only sustainable but also imbued with a deep respect for its history.
The Making Of:
Once the fabrics are selected, the transformation begins at our workshop in Spain. Each piece is carefully cut and hand-stitched, ensuring that every garment is as unique as its past and as special as its future owner. This handcrafted process guarantees a level of detail and quality that machine-made products simply can't replicate.
