Prints inspired by nature experiences
I am a self-taught printmaker living in the beautiful community of Pickering, Ontario. My work is inspired by first-hand nature experiences (most of which are enjoyed right here in Pickering) that I document in my nature journals and with my camera. Each print celebrates biodiversity, adaptations, ecosystems and conservation, while reflecting the stunning beauty of our local wild spaces. I work in a small studio in my home and produce all of my prints by hand. Every design is original and produced in its entirety by me, often guided by the advice of a few close friends who have been very generous in donating their time in the interest of my work.
To pull a print, I first roll a thin layer of ink over the surface of the carved block. Paper is then gently layered on top, and pressure is applied by hand using a baren. Designs are printed in editions of 50 or 100. Because all of my work is hand printed, slight variations in ink uniformity may occur from print to print. This speaks to the authenticity of the print and its unique, original nature. Occasionally, a small dent may appear at the top or bottom edge of the paper where the print is hung to dry, but this will be hidden by a mat once the print is framed. Again, this reflects the handcrafted character of each print and the process by which I work.
Your print will be carefully wrapped in parchment paper and posted in a sturdy square mailing tube to see that it arrives safely at its new home.
Thank you very much for your interest in my work and your support. I truly appreciate your time and consideration in viewing my prints. Footage of the process, from initial sketch to final print, and images of my broader work and nature experiences can be found on Instagram at susan_munderich.
