Frequently asked questions

What do I need to play the tablet edition?

A tablet and a PDF app you can write in with a stylus or your finger: Goodnotes, Notability, Noteshelf, PDF Expert, Xodo and Samsung Notes all work. Import the PDF and it becomes a notebook you can mark. The pages are 12 x 9 inches, the shape of a tablet held sideways, so each case fills one screen. A plain PDF viewer shows the pages but won't let you write on them. A phone can open the file too, but the cases are laid out for a tablet-sized screen.

Can I print it?

Yes. Print in landscape on Letter or A4 paper with "fit to page" turned on. Color shows the floor plans best. The file has 120 pages, so print How to Play and the Practice Case first, then the cases you want to play. Printouts are for your own household.

How do the links work?

Every line of the Contents is a link, and The Cases page, just after it, takes you to any case in one tap. At the top of each case, Hint I, Hint II, Hint III and Solution take you to that case's hints and its solution; tap the case number there to come back, or All cases to pick another. Some apps only follow links while the pen is off: switch to reading or view mode, tap the link, then pick the pen back up.

What exactly do I receive?

Two PDF files, ready as soon as your payment is confirmed: Whereabouts-Murder-Sudoku-Tablet-Edition.pdf, the book itself (120 pages: 50 cases and a practice case, hints, solutions and the Ledger), and START-HERE.pdf, one page on opening, playing and printing it. Nothing is shipped.

Can I return it or get a refund?

Because it is a digital download, it can't be returned or exchanged once the files are downloaded (at checkout, Etsy asks you to agree to that). But if a file won't open, is damaged, or isn't what the listing describes, you're still covered: message me and I'll send you a working copy or refund you.

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes. Buy it from your own account, download the files, and pass them to the person they're for by email, AirDrop or a USB stick, or print the cases and wrap them. One purchase is one copy, so please don't keep one for yourself as well.

What if I get stuck on a case?

Every case has three hints at the back, each giving away a little more than the last: where to begin, what to look for when you're stuck, and a checkpoint showing where some of the suspects stood. After them comes the full solution, step by step. Looking up the first hint never shows you the second. Still puzzled? Message me with the case number.

How hard are the cases?

They follow a year at the house. Spring (12 cases) is gentle, Summer (15) standard, Autumn (13) hard and Winter (10) expert, and every case is rated from one to five magnifying glasses. Each later season opens with a page teaching the moves it needs. Start with How to Play and the Practice Case, which is solved for you one step at a time.

Is there a paperback?

Yes. The same fifty cases are a 170-page, 6 x 9 inch color paperback, sold on Amazon: search for Whereabouts Murder Sudoku. This tablet edition is laid out for a screen instead, one case to a page, with links to every hint and solution.

Was AI used to make this?

For the pictures and the first drafts of the writing, yes; for the puzzles, no. Where everyone stood, the statements and every solution step come from my own generator and solver, ordinary software that checks every case has exactly one answer reachable without guessing. The portraits, furniture and floors were made with PixelLab, an AI image tool, and retouched by my own pipeline. The story, rules, case titles and the wording of hints and solutions were drafted with AI help and edited by me.
