About

Who is Solmode?

I'm a designer, creator, dreamer, artist, maker, curious and owner of Solmode. I believe in handmade with love and in slow design. I love recycling, sustainability, small scale and purity.

My story:
The seeds were sown many years ago. When I was a young girl , my grandmother stimulated me to crafts. After this I studied at a fashiontrade school to obtain more technical skills. Not to mention the countless hours you could find me in numerous ateliers, and workplaces of befriended artists and craftsmen. All that learned me the art of craftsmanship and gave me the guts to follow my passion.

Born in Nijmegen in 1978, I was driven to the south of The Netherlands by love. After the love ended, I stayed nonetheless. I lived, worked and organized for 15 years in two different cultural free-zones. Places where I learned about a more sustainable living.

In this time I thought about how I could justify what I was doing. I mainly made costumes out of pvc. Inspired by a new way of living and thinking I decided to quit my job in 2007 and start with Solmode. Since that day I work hard for my big dream of my sustainable fashion label.

Like the fabrics I work with, my way of working is also very organic. I usually start with the fabric and try to see which design would fit. Working with recycling and vintage fabrics, brings you to entirely new forms, approaches and elaboration. In this way one-offs and small series come to light. For example I reuse old ties and make them into quirky shoulder wraps and dresses. Designing fashion is an artistic search. I always try to capture emotion in my designs and try to create a sensual experience.
By balancing between being in business while remaining true to my ideals I'm currently designing a new series of clothing. Creations that can be customized by allowing the customer to choose from different sleeves, neck lines, length and color. All made from organic fabrics.
I also work on assignment. It's always extra-ordinary to make something special in my style for someone.

I have a great atelier at Het Werkgebouw in Maastricht. This is a collective of craftsmen. The sustainable character of having a common building and creating a platform for local craftsmanship attracts me. Together you can achieve more than being alone on an island.
Besides the workplaces we have a shop that is run by us in turns. Visitors can come there every weekend.

Wow, you made it all the way here? Thanks for reading my story. Whenever you're in the neighborhood of my atelier feel free to pass by. If you make an appointment beforehand, I'll be more than happy to reserve time for you.

Greetings,
Davina Versteeg.

Refunds and Exchanges
Important note: Make sure you take your measurements correctly. If you’re not sure how to measure, see additional information or ask someone in your environment who knows how to take measurements, which I recommend.

If you received your item and are not satisfied, you have to return it to me within 14 days after receiving it. So please email me as soon as possible to let me know the problem so we can work out a solution.
I will respond asap to inform you about the steps to take. I advice you to not take any action before I have contacted you. No returns will be given until the item is safely returned to me in the same condition as you received it.
Refunds will be for value of item only- shipping charges or any other fees can not be refunded.

If you would like to exchange the item instead of getting a refund, you can indicate this when you want to send back the item and what you would like in exchange. After receiving back the original item I will calculate the difference in cost and communicate these to you. After agreement, I will send you the item(s) and I will pay for the shipping costs for sending the new item(s).

There are no refunds for items purchased on sale, custom made or are customized in any way.

Solmode is a small, one person company, which does not have the same flexibility as some bigger companies. However, I will always do everything to come to a good understanding with the customer!
Additional policies and FAQs
I do take custom orders.

How it works. As soon as I know what you want I will create a listing. If we both agree on the order, I will make a first listing with a 50% of the total price as a payment in advance. If the creation is ready I will make photo's of it and send them to you. The remaining 50% will be paid if the item is ready to ship. If it is completely paid the item will be sent to you.

FAQ

I've seen a dress in your shop but it's a smaller/ bigger size than mine. Is it possible to alter it?
It's probably possible to enlarge or downsize this design or to custom make it in the fabric of your choice. “Contact me for more information”

I have my own fabrics, can you create something with it?
Yes I can. “contact me”

What is the turnaround time for a custom piece?
It depends on the design. For small pieces like a hooded scarf it is usually around one week. For bigger pieces like cardigans and jackets it is usually between 2 and 4 weeks.

I like your design but I would like some changes made to it. Is this possible?
Yes, almost all designs can be custom made with different fabrics/colors/prints. It's also possible to mix the top and the bottom of two different designs, “contact us for an estimate”

How do I measure my size?
Here is a little measuring guide:
- Arm length: length from shoulder knob, over elbow to wrist (arm slightly bended)
- Shoulder width: straight from left to right shoulder knob.
- Bust: measured around bust over broadest part, with bra
- Waist: around waist, between hipbone and ribs
- Hip: measured around broadest part of bottom/hips
- Leg Length: length waist-straight to floor -consider wearing your shoes of choice while measuring this. This length is best measured by someone else. for your skirt length keep in consideration also whether you wish the skirt to be ground long, or how many inches above that!
