The story of Monsteralphabet starts in 2007 when we met on the way to Santiago di Compostella. Angelika liked to draw monsters and Johan enjoyed designing typefaces.
The pilgrimage lead to some insights about the nature of the ego. Your ego makes your name the most important word in your life. When someone gets it wrong, you object. But why? Objectively, it is just a collection of letters. You could shuffle them and create a new name. Same letters, different name, you would still be the same. We take it way too seriously.
So we started to play with names, their letters and the ego. We created strange monsters and fun animals. Something to touch, feel and hold or throw into a corner or hang on the wall like a trophy. Like everything in the world, our sculptures evolved. In the beginning they were carefully designed letters, now they are powerful expressions of emotions and hidden meanings, unmasking not just a person’s ego but revealing their Alter Ego.
As a piece of art they are unique and priceless like the people they are made for. Creating art for a special person is what we cherish and what inspires us. But it is not just any piece of art we want to make, but one that makes your life fuller, richer and more beautiful. Therefore our explicit aim is to create a smile on your face. And we are very successful doing this.
Since we started Monsteralphabet we have made several hundred iTrophies that have found homes all over the world. In Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, even in the US, Australia, Japan and China people smile when they look at their Alter Ego in the form of their iTrophy.
This is the story about the people behind the iTrophies.
