Sam Crow is a daydreamer and a character collector - a curious creature with a huge love for stories and story telling in all its forms. Her Curious Creatures (mixed media sculptures and art dolls) combine all her creative urges ...costume, theatre, sculpting, story telling, creating, tinkering....playing.... Each figure is entirely made by her, by hand, using either clay or fabrics over a wire armature - sometimes both, but she prefers to work with clay for their heads - and paint, wood, found objects, various textiles and textile techniques, and a sprinkling of imagination to depict the characters she has met, seen, dreamt of or imagined - little people with large personalities. No moulds were used in their creation and none made of the originals afterwards - making them all one of a kind and unique individuals... much like us larger people. Each character has their own story ..... written especially for them and recorded in their own personal book which accompanies them. Sam's subject matter is heavily influenced by a great love of all forms of story telling, especially fairy tales ( both dark and light), and her love of costume, steampunkery and animation films – but it also depicts characters from life or imagination that just want to come out to pose! She is happiest when creating things with her hands, listening to music, surrounded by fabrics, ink, paint, clay and their associated smells, mess and potential, and she always has a huge smile for creativity and stories and the characters they contain … imaginary or real, on stage, screen, page or pavement. She hopes her work will make you smile too. Sam studied at Chelsea School of Art and Central St. Martins, both in London, and presently lives with her husband and their two children, in the South East of England, very close to the sea.
