About Crown Staffordshire
In 1833, the Green family were manufacturing pottery at the Minerva Works. By 1876 the brothers Thomas Allen and Spencer Green were operating as T.A. & S. Green. In 1889, still under the control of the brothers, the pottery was renamed Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Co. It became a limited company in 1903.
By the turn of the century, the company were producing a wide range of bone china products. In the late 1920's Crown Staffordshire pioneered a large scale production of the china floral ornaments and jewellery for which they became famous around the world.
During World War II the company produced the dishes for the armed forces including the British and Canadian navy. Due to this they were allowed to continue trading in their own premises for the duration of the war but only bone china products.
Post war, and still owned and operated by the Green family, they expanded and in 1948 the name was changed to Crown Staffordshire China Co. Ltd. By the early 1950s they employed over 200 people in their decorating department alone. In 1965, the company was sold to Semart Importing. The Crown Staffordshire name was used until it became part of the (Josiah) Wedgwood Group around 1973. Wedgwood then only used the name on speciality products until 1985 when the name disappeared entirely.
NOTE: the Crown Staffordshire mark has always said "Est 1801" which is slightly misleading. The Minerva Works Pottery where Crown Staffordshire started in 1833 (under a different name) were established in 1801 which is how that date was allowed to be used on the trademark.
