Heirloom Gifts - Handmade Ornaments
As a young girl, I received a hand painted egg ornament for Christmas from a member of my Church. It was unique and special and painted just for me. The ornament was dated, and my name was included on the back, making the treasure even more personal.
Years later, I had just moved into my first apartment and was a few months into my first job as an adult. Money was scarce and it was Christmas time. I wanted to give gifts, but with no money to spare - all I could do was make something. I thought of that little egg ornament that I loved so much...
Along with my best friend and roommate, we began to ready some eggs (blown, washed and dried) with colored twine and beads. She began to sketch some Santa's and winter scenes and I began to color them, at first using only what we had - colored markers.
Our gift recipients were so impressed with their egg ornaments they quickly asked us if they could purchase more - to give as presents. We happily agreed and swiftly purchased some acrylic paints and brushes. We have created egg ornaments every year since, and have had some Clients nearly 30 years!
As for my little egg ornament. It lives in a sturdy little box and comes out every year for the Holidays, taking its place near the top of my tree. It has lots of company now, with egg ornaments we have created over the years of family members, pets, Santa's, and one of course, of the Honeyville Baptist Church, where I received my first hand painted egg ornament for Christmas. : )
