5 out of 5 starslike the pattern but can't find the yarn, and it doesn't suggest substitutes

Hi Virgina The tension (US gauge) is provided to guide choice of substitute yarn. It would be a pity to ignore a lovely 35 year old Australian pattern when many substitute options are available depending on where one lives.

4 out of 5 starsI love this pattern but I am struggling so hard to get gauge. As I crochet up the back the width just seems to expand. I don’t know whether this is because the yarn I’m using doesn’t work with the pattern (it’s a vintage pattern so it can’t really be helped) but I am using DK and the same hook size as the pattern. If I go down a hook size I fear the fabric will become too dense.

Not all DK yarns are standardised to be equivalent. A useful technique is the WPI or Wraps Per Inch to determine the weight or thickness of your yarn. This video explains how to deal with this: https://www.loomahat.com/wraps-per-inch/. You will be aiming for 11 WPI for the yarn equivalent to Phildar Sunderland, according to Ravelry. A gauge or tension swatch is also a necessity, even with the originally specified yarn.
