I built my first piece of software in college because I couldn't remember 78 tarot card meanings. Instead of memorizing, I built a system. I typed in the cards, and it told me what they meant — together, in context, in combination. I carried my laptop into venues and did live readings for strangers. They paid me for it. The software wasn't pretty, but it worked, and that's what mattered.
Twenty years later, I still build the same way: find a real problem, build a system that solves it, make it simple enough that anyone can use it.
My Tax Expense Manager started because I was drowning in my own PayPal and bank CSV exports every tax season. Copying line by line. Sorting manually. Missing categories. I built a Google Sheets template that auto-categorizes expenses the moment you paste your data. Set up your vendor keywords once, and every matching transaction sorts itself. I used it for my own taxes. Then I thought — other people need this too.
