Frequently asked questions

How are your sheepskin tanned?

East Perry was founded by Janine after discovering the safe, traditional methods used by Eastern European tanneries to create their hides. These tanneries begin by washing the hides in a water solution rich in tannins, derived from wood chips. Any residual wood chips are carefully combed out of the fur. The tanning process itself is carried out using bio-based lactic acid,(it looks similar to kefir). To soften the fur, we use lanolin, a natural wool wax and animal fat, rather than the harsh chemicals typically used in chrome tanning. This use of lanolin not only softens the fur but also imparts additional medicinal benefits to our hides.

Is shedding normal with sheepskin products?

Among all types of animal hides, sheepskin stands out for its exceptional resistance to shedding. While a small amount of fur might shed upon arrival due to loose fibers from the cleaning and shaping process, this is completely normal. We recommend giving your sheepskin a few strong shakes when it first arrives to remove any loose fur. Crafted from natural fur, our sheepskins retain their beauty when properly cared for. For more detailed care instructions, please visit our CARE PAGE.

Why does my sheepskin have a hole in it?

Holes in our sheepskins are a natural occurrence from the tanning process, which is done with the hole intact to ensure the skin hardens and won’t expand or tear further. About 30% of our pelts have these hardened holes, which are covered by the fur and do not affect the integrity of the sheepskin. Each tannery we work with uses traditional, chemical-free methods, which may result in these unique characteristics. If you have any concerns, feel free to contact us.

What causes bald spots on sheepskin?

Bald spots on sheepskin are usually from the belly side of the hide, which naturally has less fur. This is not a flaw but a characteristic of the natural sheepskin. The area may be trimmed or left as is, depending on its impact on the hide's overall integrity. This feature does not affect the quality or durability of the sheepskin.

Are your sheepskins dyed, or are they naturally colored?

All our sheepskins are 100% natural and have not been dyed or bleached. The colors you see are the authentic shades of the sheepskin, just as nature intended.

What’s the difference between the white sheepskins and the yellowish ones?

The yellow color in some sheepskins, such as medical sheepskins, comes from the lanolin used in the tanning process. The white or ivory hides are simply different breeds of sheep, which naturally vary in color.

What are the non-medical sheepskins tanned with?

Our non-medical sheepskins are tanned using lactic acid, similar to kefir, and are softened with lanolin. We also clean the hides with a mix of tannins before the tanning process.

How can I reduce the natural scent of my sheepskin?

To minimize the natural scent of your sheepskin, we recommend using a 100% pure essential oils, such as lavender or a citrus. You can part the fur and place a dab of oil right at the root of the fur (not directly on the fur) and do this in 5-10 places. You can also tumble it on low heat with a scented dryer sheet. Either of these methods will quickly eliminate any odor.
