Turning a writing prompt into a dream business!
Hi! My name is Kristy and I live in a small town in Mississippi. I have a loving soul mate and three amazing kids. It has been my dream for years and years to own my own business. I think the very first storefront I ever wanted was a record store – I wanted to bring something cool and edgy and more “me” to my very conservative hometown. The next idea was making gift baskets for all occasions, because I was good at making them and had such a fun time picking out gifts and arranging the baskets. Then I wanted to make tee-shirts with my unique, fun, sarcastic quotes (which I still have a desire to do!).
After abandoning my fleeting dreams, I decided to go back to school to pursue my original love—writing. I graduated Cum Laude from Delta State University with a BA in English (creative writing was my concentration) and a minor in Psychology. Soon my love and I welcomed twin girls to our family of three, and I took a hiatus from any outside work, focusing on my kids.
In December of 2015, however, I decided to get back in the game, creatively. I needed an outlet, something that would combine my love of words, beauty, quotes, literature, inspiration, and design. I remembered an assignment in Comp I in which we journaled using different writing prompts. There was a particular prompt in which we were to describe our ideal bedroom. My answer was along the lines of, “walls covered in my favorite quotes.” Bam!! Why not make this a reality? Obviously I couldn’t write all over my walls (well, I could, but...), so I thought, make prints! You can change them out, add more, do anything you want! You can make them for the kids, the bathroom, the kitchen—there’s no limit to the possibilities! And there it was. The passionate dream turned reality—and now I’m sharing my love with you.
I bought a tablet for digital drawing and soon began to work on making my prints. I learned the ins and outs of Photoshop, purchased other digital tools, and took advantage of Word. With my trusty laptop, tablet, and printer, I feel as if I can bring a little sunshine into someone’s world, some inspiration to get through the day. and a smile and a giggle, perhaps. I also took my love for drawing and photography and scan my drawings and photos to make prints, too! I love being able to transform my art into something than can be shared with so many others who may have otherwise not been able to have.
