This listing depicts both of the Trajan's Column prints that we offer.
You can purchase only Print #1, Print #2 or Both of the prints. Simply make your selection in the dropdown menu when placing your order of which artwork options you may prefer. Print #1 is for 'Column of Trajan'. Print #2 is for 'Column of Marcus Aurelius'. The 'Both Prints' option is for shipment of both Print #1 (Column of Trajan) and Print #2 'Column of Marcus Aurelius'.
In addition, please refer to the corresponding number (either '1' or '2') on the listing images for the depiction of 'Print 1' (referred to as '1' on the listing image) or 'Print 2' (referred to as '2' on the listing image) for identification purposes between the 'Column of Trajan' (Print 1) or the 'Column of Marcus Aurelius' (Print 2).

Trained as an architect in his native Venice, Giovanni Battista Piranesi went to Rome in 1740 and became a prolific printmaker. A lifelong champion of Rome, he was an enthusiastic polemicist in the eighteenth-century debate as to whether Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome was the more significant source of Western civilization. These magnificent unframed reproduction prints of the Imperial Columns of Trajan and Marcus Aurelius are to be considered within that context, visually underscoring the greatness of Ancient Rome.
The two archival prints we offer by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, are referred to as the Columns of Trajan and Marcus Aurelius, respectively.
Print #1, is referred to as Piranesi’s Elevation of the Column of Trajan (ruled 98–117 CE). This artwork shows the frieze that wraps around the entire column, depicting scenes from the two campaigns that Trajan undertook against the Dacians in what is now Romania. At the top of the column, Piranesi fancifully restored the long-lost statue of the Emperor, standing on an elaborate base of the artist’s own invention.
Our Print #2 is referred to as Piranesi’s, The Column of Marcus Aurelius (ruled 161–180 CE). This facsimile artwork is a monument modelled after the Column of Trajan. On this column, the frieze depicts scenes from the two campaigns that Marcus undertook against the barbarian tribes that inhabited lands north of the Danube. Piranesi, faithful to the original, includes the post-Antique statue of St. Paul that in 1588 had replaced the long-lost ancient statue of Marcus atop the column.
This listing is for your choice of a single print (print #1 or print #2) or for both prints (#1 and #2).
When choosing the size of 'Both Prints', the size listed will be the size for each of the prints you receive. Therefore, if you choose 'Both Prints - 27" x 97"', then each of the prints you receive will each be sized at 27" x 97" respectively.
