I create fused dichroic glass jewelry and dichroic glass door knobs and drawer pulls. Many people ask me "what is dichroic glass"? Dichroic simply means two colors. When you look at dichroic glass, you see a reflective color and with clear dichroic a transmitted color. Dichroic glass is glass that has been coated with metal oxides and quartz crystals, which produces dazzling, incredible colors.
I love creating with dichroic glass, it is the focal point for most of my designs. I start by cutting my glass into various shapes and then layer the glass, five to seven layers, to create depth and interest. (My husband said it looked 3D to him, so 3D Glass Designs was born.) I then heat the glass in my kiln up to 1550 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the glass and the effect I want to achieve. After the firing, the glass is cooled slowly, to ensure strength and durability. Each glass cabochon is one of a kind, so I use metalsmithing techniques and beading to create beautiful settings for my cabochons.
