About

Apparently, I live to make lamps

I’d already been making lamps for a while, here and there, when a few years back a friend started handing me kitchenware she found, saying “Make this into a light.” So I did: antique toasters, espresso makers, food mills.

After a few months of this, it started to become a bit of an obsession. My eBay tab started to mount, and way too many lamps were piling up around the house. I wanted to find homes for them, but didn’t know how.

Then I found out about Etsy.

Nowadays, I have a small workshop in my basement where I store parts and do the grubbier parts of the work: drilling, cutting, steel-wooling. The preliminary design stage also usually happens there – stacking parts on top of one another until they start a conversation, and then figuring out how to make the structure permanent.

Once a lamp is loosely assembled, it goes upstairs, and I live with it for a while: stare at it, handle it, experiment with different light bulbs, and just generally obsess. I almost always end up taking it apart again and making adjustments to refine the proportions or the finish or swap in a different piece I’ve just remembered I have squirreled away somewhere.

Finally, when I think it’s as near to perfect as it’s going to get, I reassemble it. I make all the connections good and tight, add a switch if it doesn’t have one already . . . and then fall at least a little bit in love with it. This part is crucial. If I don’t love it, I can’t let it go.

Of course, occasionally I love one so much I can’t let it go, but that’s another story.

My lamps - functional, decorative, or both - are made from objects I find. Sometimes these are vintage lamp parts, but more often they are nice old kitchen appliances or gears or bits of plumbing. The result is pieces that add levity as well as light to their surroundings.

Paypal or Credit Card. Please pay within 3 days.

Shipping
In most cases, postage to the western U.S. will be lower than what's shown. Don't hesitate to contact me for accurate shipping costs to your location. In any case, if shipping is significantly lower than what you are charged, I will automatically refund the excess.

I am also happy to ship overseas or use expedited shipping. Please contact me to set the process in motion.

I insist on insurance. That cost is included in shipping.
Refunds and Exchanges
Most of my pieces are made from vintage objects on the outside, with new functional parts inside. This means they will show signs of their age, which is part of their appeal, but the works will last for a long time. Unfortunately, photographs can unintentionally either disguise or exaggerate the wear on a piece. I encourage you to take this into consideration when making the decision to buy. If you find you aren't happy with your choice, you have 14 days in which to return it for a refund of the item price, not including shipping.
Additional policies and FAQs
If you have an object you think would make a good lamp, I may be able to help. Use the link to request a custom order or drop me a note. Custom orders are subject to a 20% nonrefundable deposit, as noted above.
