namaste and welcome to the 5th element yoga etsy store :) i am a bhakti (devotional) yogini who draws mindful meditation, self awareness, and strength from mala making and charm making. i am classically trained in the lineage of swami satyananda saraswati and have trained yoga instructors in the lineage of the bihar school of yoga in india, as well as in yoga therapy. i have also been a clinical herbalist for 13+ years, and have studied ayurveda, native american, chinese, and vedic healing throughout my life. i have been blessed with a very colorful, spiritual, and diverse path in my life, crossed by old souls and compassionate gurus in every lineage. i opened my shop in 2005 and finally came to etsy in 2011. i have been making malas and charms with the best of intentions for 15+ years now, am grateful for my experience, and hope to share this energy through each individual connection that I am graced with. all pieces are made with mindful meditation, and a devotional, compassionate energy.

most of the malas you will find here are made from grade a+ and above semi-precious gemstones, high quality woods, and cultural items, which are handmade, fair trade, and hand chosen for each piece. many of the charms you will find available here are made from real bronze, white bronze, gold, and sterling silver, and are 100% designed by me. most materials are sourced from personal friends and artists with amazing hearts and amazing spirits, from all corners of the world. woods are sourced from farmed plantations, free from illegal harvesting or trading, and bone is sourced from buddhist resources, without harm to sentient beings. all malas, rosaries, and jewelry include a Tibetan brocade mala bag, and are energetically charged and cleansed with specific mantras which include a Devi prayer, a Ganesh invocation, and the Sri mrityunjaya mantra which is a powerful healing mantra. domestic 2-3 day shipping within the u.s. is free which includes insurance against loss up to $100 and all orders are shipped within 72 hours. :)

thank you for supporting small business and artists on etsy. I sincerely hope you find something here that speaks to you :)

A WORD ABOUT GEMSTONES:

I carry many gemstones that are very difficult to find for malas. While I cannot divulge the specifics of my resources, I will say that my Arizona turquoise is sourced from a turquoise broker who represents many Arizona mines and has been in the business for over 30 years. most of my other stones are Indian gemstones in origin, but some are sourced from fair trade regions in Africa, Nepal, Tibet, etc. and many are personal friends. if you have a question about a gemstone's origin, please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to help as best I can.

A WORD ABOUT STONE PROPERTIES:

the energetic properties of each piece will not depend so much upon a stone or the materials used, but on the intention of its creator, wearer, and the mantra used. personally, i don’t believe that a stone can heal, but i do believe that stones carry an energetic property that may be used as an aid, similar to a plant or any product of the earth. a plant carries several therapeutic properties; its color, its aroma, its taste, etc. I believe that stones have energetic qualities that can have an effect on us in the same way. each type of stone has its own unique talent, and gemstone colors, shapes, and textures can all have special meanings to us. you can intuitively choose which stones are best for you by noting which stones you are drawn to most. keep your heart open and allow the appropriate stone to find its way to you :)

A WORD ABOUT GEMSTONE INFORMATION:

I take my gemstone information from one of the largest libraries on the web that cross references its information with folklore, ancient healing practice, modern healing practice, Vedic astrology, western astrology, chakra healing, etc. and then compiles the most accurate information they can about each gemstone. I then condense this information as best I can into my gemstone cards.

A WORD ABOUT DIFFUSER BRACELETS:

there is a reason I don't list my items as diffuser items. after being an herbalist for over 15 years now, I can say with certainty that essential oil will eat through the cord of your bracelet or mala. essential oil will eat through ANY kind of plastic. this includes cord used in stretch bracelets, hi tec cord, nylon cord, and monofilament cord. the only cord that is somewhat safe is wire. if you would like to test this yourself, you can take a plastic bowl and pour some essential oil into it undiluted. diluted essential oil will still eat through it but it will take longer. leave the bowl overnight to find it ruined in the morning. this is why I don't sell diffuser bracelets. they don’t last long when essential oil is applied to them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simplified Terms

the 5th element: known as space, sky, ether, or akasha in sanskrit. used to designate the "inner" space of the heart or the space of consciousness.

chakra: each of the centers of energetic power in the human body. there are seven main chakras described in the tantric scriptures. each chakra represents specific vibrations and frequencies with progressively higher states of consciousness. the key to unlocking the entire system is the heart chakra.

mantra: a word or sound vibration repeated to aid concentration in meditation and transcend the thinking mind.

meditation: a mental technique or practice of training the mind to become silent (the cessation of the mind) which is repetitively practiced for the purpose of attaining self awareness, an enlightened path, self-realization, and oneness with all beings. characterized as blissful.

metta: compassion ❤.

mindful meditation: an attentive awareness of the reality of things (especially of the present moment).

yoga: the cessation of the mind waves :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using Your Mala

a japa mala or mala (meaning garland) is a set of beads used by hindus, buddhists, and yoga practitioners during meditation. they are most commonly made from 108 beads, though other numbers, all divisible by 9, are also used. mala bracelets are made with 18, 21, 27, 36, or 54 beads, and are used to count repetitions of mantra during meditation, or prostrations, by rotating the beads between the thumb and fingers. mantra practice may include reciting prayers, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra. this practice is known in sanskrit as japa. I try to make all malas unique and available in these counts, while doubling as jewelry. malas that are listed as 24 counts are not really malas, but I have made them available in those sizes to accommodate larger size wrists who enjoy my designs.

to use a mala in meditation and chanting prayers, do not pass over the summit charm or guru bead (if there is one) out of respect for our teachers. instead, continue back to the first bead by moving in the opposite direction. 108 bead malas are counted only once all the way around the mala, while 54 count malas are counted forward once and backward once to total 108 repetitions. 27 count malas are counted four times, forward and backward, to total 108 repetitions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extending the Life of Your Mala

to extend the life of your mala, do not carry it by the tail, tassel, or guru bead. please avoid using essential oils or getting your mala wet, as this may weaken some malas. solar or lunar cleansing is just as powerful as water.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About Mantras

the word mantra means "to transcend the thinking mind." mantras are sanskrit words or seed syllables that are sung, chanted, or mentally repeated with the use of a mala, in order to cultivate an energetic that is supportive to the body/mind, and to aid the mind in concentration during meditation. for example, have you ever noticed that your tone and words create a certain energetic in your environment? have you ever caught yourself humming a tune and noticed that it may be the humming itself that has lightened your mood? using mantras has this same effect. these sounds or phrases may be used as the object of concentration in order to quiet the mind, and can be chanted out loud or internally to create an environment that is conducive to meditation and healing. throughout the ages, mantra practice has been considered the safest method for meditation and spiritual progression.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Common Mantras

aum: pronounced and sometimes written as om or ohm, the vibration of this mantra is said to be the first primordial sound of existence. its vibration represents the manifestation of the Supreme Being, the universe, past, present, and future, and the cyclical nature of beginning, transformation, and end. it is the reflection of the absolute reality, without beginning or end, and embraces all that exists. when taken letter by letter, A-U-M represents the divine energy united in its three elementary aspects: creation, preservation and liberation.

om gum ganapataye namaha: pronounced ohm-goom-ghana-pot-aye-ay-nah-mah-ha, this mantra is associated with the deity ganesha, the remover of obstacles. it helps to remove that which stands between us and our desires.

om mani padme hum: pronounced ohm-mah-nee-pod-may-hum, this mantra is said to carry all of the teachings of the buddha. it invokes the embodiment of metta, the philosophy and practice of universal love and compassion.

om namah shivaya: pronounced ohm-nah-mah-shee-vie-yah, this mantra is associated with the deity shiva, the protector. it invokes strength, protection, fearlessness, and consciousness.

om shanti shanti shanti: pronounced ohm-shahntee, this mantra literally translates as om peace peace peace.

om sri maha lakshmiyei namaha: pronounced ohm-shree-mah-ha-locksh-my-ay-nah-mah-ha, this mantra is associated with the deity lakshmi, the giver of prosperity and wealth. it invokes abundance and prosperity.

om sri rama jaya rama: pronounced ohm-shree-rah-mah-jie-yah-rah-mah, this mantra is associated with the deity rama, and invokes transcendance of karma and purification of the ego.

so hum: known as the so hum breath, this mantra is chanted mentally with each breath, with “so” chanted on the outbreath and “hum” chanted on the inbreath. the mantra translates as "i am that" and when chanted, brings us to an awareness that we simply "are" and are one with the universal energy that is without form.
