A sustainable sewing studio

7 Pine Design Studio is all about sustainable sewing, and supporting children in need through charity sewing. I am a “one woman show” based in coastal Massachusetts, USA, and ship worldwide. My sewing machines are powered by solar panels, and all fabric scraps are recycled through a collection center serving the paper industry.

7 Pine Design was established in 1995, when I retired from working full-time in the garment industry as a technical designer (I still freelance as a fit specialist for other design firms). Over decades, I had accumulated more Sample Sale “deadstock” fabrics and trims than I could possibly use for my little family. My shop began with these end-of-production bolts of fabrics, and yardage leftover from sewing sample garments. I constantly add to my stash by shopping at flea markets and thrift shops. My favorite up-cycle materials are vintage linens: curtains, tablecloths, and placemats. If I spot a roll of lace from an old factory, I grab it. The only new-production fabrics I use are classic Kaufman-brand Kona cottons, and a limited amount of current materials requested by clients.

Every purchase from 7 Pine Design Studio supports charity sewing for families in need. I sew dresses for little girls around the world who have never had a new clothing item of their own, through several excellent non-profit organizations. I also sew bereavement gowns for preemie babies through volunteer groups serving hospital NICUs (more information, including my free patterns and tutorials, can be found on my sewing blog: www.7pinedesign.com). Even though the preemie gowns are made from donated worn wedding dresses and the girls outfits are from fabric I already own, the costs for packing materials and shipping fees are substantial, and these expenses are taken care of through my Etsy shop.

My most recent sewing projects involve up-cycling vintage wedding dresses that I purchase at flea markets and thrift shops. I turn these into one-of-a-kind heirloom portrait dresses, communion outfits, and baptism gowns. All profits from the sale of these items directly support charity sewing.

Do you take rush orders? Yes if time permits. Please convo me with your event date!
Do you take custom requests? Yes if time permits. Please convo me with your ideas!
Can I get free swatches to check the fabric or trim? Yes, just ask!
How long have you been sewing? Over 50 years.
Where did you learn to sew? My mother and grandmother taught me.
Where did you learn patternmaking? At the Fashion Institute of Technology in new York City.
Are all of your fabrics vintage/upcycled? Most are, however I do invest in new Kona cotton for some petticoats and slips. I also use some newer fabrics that have been donated to me by friends, or requested by a client for custom items.

Shop policies

7PineDesign is the Etsy storefront for my studio at 7 Pine Street in lovely seaside Newburyport, Massachusetts, where I handcraft apparel with extra care and attention to fine quality workmanship and detail. Contrary to popular belief, seamstresses don't just "whip something together"! Your purchase involves many hours of cutting, pressing, stitching, more pressing, more stitching, and finishing details before it is carefully packaged and shipped to you.

My creations are organized into these categories:

CUSTOM-MADE: as photo shown, but MADE TO MEASURE to your specific size request. You will not receive the actual garment in the photo, because the garments on dress-forms are for my reference, and the garments photographed on live models are kept by the models. I am a professionally-trained patternmaker and can accommodate any size from preemie infant to extra-plus, depending of course on the style (and fabric width). All orders are placed in production queue, and turnaround time is usually 2 weeks (plus 1 week for First Class shipping). This is however an unpredictable business, and I may be able to accommodate "rush" orders if you contact me first..

READY-TO-SHIP: made in small batches in a limited size range; measurement chart is listed for each style (specify your size request in the “message to seller“ field at checkout). The photograph will be of a "sample size", therefore your fabric print placement may vary. Please allow for slight differences.

ONE-OF-A-KIND: made only once, in the size shown, these styles are more detailed, using more fabric, special trims, unique details. The photograph is for the exact item that will be shipped. If you want to be absolutely sure that nobody else will be wearing an outfit, One-of-a-Kind is the way to go!

Why so much white in your shop?
Many seamstresses avoid white "because you have to have a spotless studio!" but I think it's worth it because I love white! It's classic, fresh, flattering...some people find ivory more flattering so I can do any white style in ivory upon request. I fell in love with white while designing for Victoria's Secret, back day that the stores were full of "Victorian whites" (now it's mostly pink polyester....). White is perfect for lingerie, portrait apparel, even baby-wear....if it gets stained just soak in OxyClean and hang in the sun.

Why don't you have anything in stock?
First because I have no room: my studio can fit one sample photo garment for each style, plus bolts of fabric...there is no space for stock. Second, because I offer so many sizes. Even a single style can be made in many sizes, fabrics, colors, and lengths....I would need a warehouse to keep everything in stock. Instead I make each order one at a time, upon customer request, to your specifications. That said, occasionally I cut up end-of-bolt fabric and offer unique one-of-a-kind pieces for immediate shipment.

Returns and exchanges
CUSTOM MADE TO MEASURE purchases are made specifically to your order and unfortunately are not exchangeable or refundable. I want you to be delighted with your purchase, so I do all that I can during the order process so that you will understand what you are ordering. Please read the listing fully and feel free ask if you have questions before purchasing an item.

FABRIC SWATCHES are FREE , to ensure that you know what you are buying (just ask!) since colors do not always register accurately on the computer screen, and because you can’t feel the fabrics through the computer.

SIZE and FIT: Size charts are shown as the last photo for each listing; if shopping from a phone, you may need to view in "landscape" mode. Custom made items can be adjusted to any size measurement; just leave me specifics in "Notes to Seller" upon checkout. Please let me know if you have any sizing questions before placing your order, to ensure a good fit. Measure children often, as they "grow like weeds"!

PHOTOGRAPHS: don't hesitate to ask to see additional photos of any details, outside or inside of the garment

ALTERATIONS are possible on a limited basis; please contact me to discuss costs.

If there is a problem with your PURCHASED ITEM, contact me & I will see what I can do. If I decide a refund is possible, fees/shipping & material costs will not be refunded. If alterations are needed, customer is responsible for return shipping.

If there is a problem with DELIVERY, contact me and I will put in a trace with the US Postal Service. As soon as I release each package to the USPS and obtain a tracking number, I have zero control over how fast it travels and what happens when it reaches the destination. The best I can do if a package does not arrive, is to help the customer navigate the USPS. Please understand that I cannot give purchase refunds due to issues with the postal system. I highly recommend that all customers double-check the address that you have provided through your credit card or Paypal, as that is the address which will automatically be used by the USPS (as it shows on your Etsy receipt) as incorrectly provided addresses are the most common reason for non-delivery. Also if you live in an area where package delivery is not secure, I highly recommend purchasing shipping insurance together with your order.

CANCELLATIONS are accepted for custom orders within 24 hours of order placement. After that time, your order goes into production queue, materials are purchased, and the product is yours.

READY-TO-SHIP items are returnable (unworn) within a week for shop credit (customer pays for return shipping).

CLEARANCE and SAMPLE SALE items are final sale.
Payment is appreciated at time of purchase. Paypal is preferred (you don’t need a PayPal account, you can checkout with PayPal using Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover). You should receive a confirmation “purchase” email from Etsy (sent to the email address you provided to Etsy) PLUS a confirmation “payment” email from PayPal..

Direct Checkout is also available through Etsy, using major credit cards.

Money order or checks are accepted; shipment (or custom production) starts after check clears.

Etsy gift cards always welcomed!
Most items in my shop are CUSTOM MADE TO MEASURE
"10 Available" means that I have the materials on hand to produce 10 pieces, NOT that there are 10 pieces already made. With the exception of Sample Sale items and a few Ready-to-ship, I do not have any ready-to-ship items.

My production time is generally about 2 weeks (plus 2 to 5 days for First Class USPS shipping), because orders are unpredictable and tend to come in clumps. Orders are usually filled first-come-first-served unless there is an emergency; I make exceptions to "rush" items for baptisms, Christenings, other urgent situations (please inquire BEFORE placing an order if you require it by a certain date, because it may be best to upgrade shipping and that must be included WITH your purchase)

Ready-to-Ship items are sent within 1-2 business days after receipt of payment (plus 2 to 5 days for First Class USPS shipping).

Items are always enclosed in cellophane to ensure against moisture or smoke damage during delivery.

Shipping Address: the Etsy system will automatically set up your purchase to ship to the address linked to your charge card or PayPal. This means that if you have moved but not notified your payment card, your package may go to your previous address, so please double check and update the address with your order by over-riding the old address. If you discover after your package is sent, that you want it sent to a different address, I MAY be able to process a USPS Intercept, which will cost you $12.

Gifts: If your purchase is a gift going to a different address, please be sure to enter that address when ordering. Please double-check the address, as I can't be responsible for incorrect addresses. Again, I MAY be able to process a USPS Intercept, at a cost of $12 if it is not too late.

Shipping: Small packages (under one pound) are eligible for First Class mail; delivery can be expected within 2 to 5 days. For faster delivery you may choose Priority Mail ; delivery can be expected within 2 to 3 days . Delivery always is affected by your distance from a major urban center, and may take longer during holidays.

For overnight delivery you may choose USPS Express. I do not live near any FedEx or UPS service centers.

If you would like insurance to protect against loss after your purchase leaves my hands, or Signature Confirmation, please notify me BEFORE purchase so that I can add that.

You will receive an email from Etsy confirming shipment of your order, together with a link to USPS tracking information.

Customers outside of the U.S. are responsible for customs clearance and payment of duty/taxes including VAT. All international customs forms are filled in per U.S. law as purchases, not gifts. Thank you for your understanding that I have no control over import customs/duties within the destination country.

UK Residents: Sometimes the UK postal System will hold onto incoming packages and send the customer a grey postcard requesting that you travel to your post office and pay the Royal Mail Handling Fee (I believe it is 8 lb UK) to receive your purchase. The card may indicate that "Not enough postage was paid". I'm sorry if this happens, however there is nothing the sending shop can do about this. In the U.S. we are charged postage amount required by the USPS, which is automatically calculated by Etsy within the Calculated Shipping system. Any additional VAT, Customs Duties, plus the possible RMHF is legally the responsibility of the consumer. Also please note that when you do go pick up your package, they will clarify for you that the fee is due to Customs, not undercharged postage.

For Canada and Everywhere Else, I use International First Class. Delivery is expected (but not guaranteed) within 1 month, depending on your address and distance from a major city, and also depending on customs clearance, which is busier during holidays.

If you prefer International Priority Mail, please contacting me before purchasing.

The U.S. Post Office provides the customs number of your package for tracking within your country (I only receive information following your package as far as the U.S. border).
