Education and Communication from a Neurodivergent Mind for Neurodivergent minds
My journey into becoming a speech-language pathologist is rooted in my own educational experiences and the guidance I received along the way. It all began in 10th grade when my high school guidance counselor suggested I become a Speech Pathologist. My first reaction was "what's that?" When I learned all that Communication therapists had to offer, I knew I wanted to join the field! I am grateful that my guidance counselor recognized my love for working with children, my creativity, and my interest in neuroscience.
Despite struggling with an undiagnosed learning disability and disliking traditional Math, Science and English classes, a pivotal moment occurred in 9th grade biology. My teacher introduced cell biology through a creative analogy about a "donut factory" He gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my understanding of the cell through a claymation project. This catered to my unique learning style and ignited a newfound passion for education. This experience, along with the support of many dedicated educators, helped me appreciate and embrace my unique abilities. Today, as a licensed speech-language pathologist specializing in special education, I create engaging, accessible resources that cater to neurodivergent learners, inspired by my students. Through AACcessible Learning, I aim to make education enjoyable and inclusive, fostering curiosity and self-exploration for all students, regardless of their needs.
