About

Each jewel is one of a kind, unique, like in nature. Like us.

I was born to a lively South American family.
The Samba, caipirinha and asado were part of my vocabulary and my high school years were spent in Mexico City. It was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful gifts that my parents gave me.

I returned to Israel to complete my army service, to go on a big trip to the East and West and to study at Art College.
And here I flourish and grow, raising four children and a business too.

Twice a week for the past 13 years I go to a place where time stands still – The Nachlat Binyamin pedestrianized street mall, where I sold wooden products on which I wrote words in Yiddish. This is a meeting place for people of all kinds.

Like Tsipi, a Holocaust survivor whose Yiddish humor makes me laugh each time anew, and who inspired my products. Like the toilet paper holder on which I wrote “Groysse Yetsiyah” (Big Exit), or the newspaper holder with the name “Letste Nayes” (Latest News), the box for the “Tsetalach” (small notes and pieces of paper), the hanger for the “Schmates” (old worn-out clothes), and the shelf “Nicht Fargessen” (Don’t Forget). Until I couldn’t anymore.

I broke a vertebra in my back as a result of a stupid bone disease and decided to leave the dust and machinery noise of the carpentry workshop and switch to work with soft materials.
I started to create soft and pleasant jewelry from the most colorful fabrics I could find, influenced by the color of yesterday’s sky, by the laundry that my neighbor hung to dry today, and by my husband’s promises for tomorrow (he’s going to bring me chrysanthemums!). Each piece of jewelry is unique, a real one-of-a-kind, like in nature, like us.

Later the workshops were born. Workshops for women who love doing and creating together, shoulder to shoulder, heart, touching a heart, at the end of which each woman wears her own unique piece of jewelry.

And just recently I’ve added the DIY kits, my baby, a world full of colors and shapes, packed inside “Do It Yourself” kits, so that I can pass on to you too the power and simplicity of hand-crafted creation.

And so, there on the desk grows my self-portrait. Fabrics in a myriad of colors, needles of all sizes, a pair of scissors that cut really well, and another pair that could once, threads for sewing and embroidery, sparkling beads and an old pendant from grandma, buttons and pompoms and one sewing machine that knows how to slide a thread through a needle all by itself.

And I now understand that the change did not just happen randomly, for no reason, “around the back”. Through touching the fabrics I am transported back to my childhood, to wandering around sewing machines, to my parents’ clothes factory, somewhere there between the samba and the caipirinha.

Enjoy your visit,
Liat
