Il y a des années, j'étais mariée à un homme juif dont les parents âgés avaient réussi à fuir l'Allemagne nazie en 1937 ou 1938.
Je me suis intéressée aux histoires de ma belle-mère et aux objets qu'elle m'a offerts, notamment une robe métallique noire et or des années 1930.
En Allemagne, mon beau-père était ophtalmologue, tandis que sa jeune épouse restait à la maison. Ils trouvèrent un parent éloigné en Angleterre qui accepta de les parrainer et ils purent quitter le pays. Ils ne pouvaient emporter qu'une certaine somme d'argent, mais ils prirent des meubles, des œuvres d'art, des vêtements et du linge de maison. Ma belle-mère était issue d'une famille aisée et son mari, le médecin, avait dû subvenir aux besoins de sa mère veuve dès son plus jeune âge. Je les ai connus lorsqu'ils avaient plus de soixante-dix ans. Je n'ai jamais vu aucun de ces beaux objets, à l'exception de cette robe en maille métallisée des années 1930 que je portais. Plus tard, après leur décès, j'ai dû vider la maison et j'ai retrouvé tous ces vêtements des années 1930, ainsi que quelques-uns des années 1940 et 1950, du linge de maison, des albums photos, des sacs à main, des gants et des bibelots. Certains avaient de la valeur. La plupart des affaires ont été entreposées pour mes enfants. J'ai gardé les vêtements, le linge de maison, les photos et les petits objets. Je passais des heures à admirer la lingerie des années 1930, faite main et si belle. J'ai regardé des photos et je l'ai reconnue dans certains vêtements que je possède aujourd'hui. L'appartement où ils vivaient ressemblait à ceux qu'on voit dans les films d'époque. Au travail, j'avais des amis passionnés d'antiquités. J'ai fini par collectionner du linge de maison sans vraiment savoir pourquoi, mais en apprenant constamment de nouvelles choses sur les vêtements et les antiquités sur eBay et d'autres sites. J'allais aux salons du textile de Brimfield et de Sturbridge, et j'y emmenais tous mes amis. Ces salons étaient formidables ! J'y ai acheté des robes blanches édouardiennes pour mes futurs petits-enfants, qui ont pu les porter pour des photos. J'ai fini par vendre à Brimfield et à Sturbridge, rencontrant des gens formidables et apprenant énormément. C'est un travail de longue haleine. Je travaillais encore et je faisais cela à temps partiel. Maintenant à la retraite, je peux vendre en ligne. J'aime beaucoup plus chiner que vendre. Je continue à vendre au salon de Brimfield et en ligne sur Etsy. Nous passons maintenant quelques mois d'hiver dans le sud de la Floride et j'ai découvert des boutiques d'antiquités et des centres commerciaux intéressants sur la route et en Floride.
J'ai collectionné des objets comme des figurines Lladro, des bourses anciennes, des éventails en dentelle, des pièces Maxfield Parrish, des crémier en cuivre lustré de 2,5 cm, ainsi que des salières et poivrières en cristal taillé et en inox. J'adore la dentelle Point de Gaze et la dentelle normande.

I became interested in my mother in laws stories and items that she gave me - a 1930's black and gold metallic dress.
In Germany my father in law was an eye, nose and ear doctor while his young wife stayed home. They found a distant relative in England that would sponsor them and they got out. They could only take a certain amount of money, but they took furniture, art work, clothes, and linens. My mother-in-law, was from a wealthy family and her husband the doctor had to help his widowed mother as a young man. I knew them when they were in their 70's. I never saw any of the beautiful items except for that one 1930's metallic knit dress which I wore. Later when they passed, I had to clean out the house and found all of these clothes from the 30's and a few from the 40 and 50's, plus linens, photos albums, purses, gloves and Knick knacks. Some valuable. Most went into storage for my kids. I kept the clothes, linens and pictures and small stuff. I used to just sit and look at the lingerie from the 30's that was handmade and so beautiful. I went thru pics and saw her in some of the items I now have. The apartment they lived in was something like the ones you see in the movies about the times. At my work, I had friends who were into antiques. Eventually I started to collect linens and really had no idea why but learning more about them and clothes all the time on ebay and other sites. I went to Brimfield and the Sturbridge Textile shows and brought every friend with me. What wonderful shows, where I bought Edwardian white dresses for future grandchildren and they did get to wear them for pics. Eventually I sold at Brimfield and the Sturbridge Shows meeting wonderful people and learning a lot. It is a lot of work. I was still working and doing this part time. Now retired, I can sell online. I really like the shopping more than the selling. I continue to sell at the Brimfield show and online here at Etsy. We now winter for a few months in South Florida and I have found some interesting antique shops and malls on the way down and in FL.
