It's a fabulous thing to give life to fabric, to make something move well, the harmony of colour. -Hubert de Givenchy
Hello! I’m Monica, a graphic designer and milliner from Buffalo, NY. I’ve been creating hats and hair accessories since 2012.
I needed another creative outlet besides graphic design, and always loved fashion (I almost majored in it!). I fell in love with millinery while in college and started my shop during my last semester, in tandem with my senior seminar project (We had to have an art show showing our designs. I chose to create the visual identity for my Etsy shop as well as create about a dozen pieces). I actually sold a few of the hair accessories, and figured I’d keep creating and selling on Etsy. The rest is history!
So, what does the phrase ‘Across Lots’ mean?
“Across Lots” is Victorian slang for getting over obstacles (according to a source I found on the internet over a decade ago). At the time, I wanted a name that conveyed that my shop had a niche/alternative market and was eclectically inspired (I was really into Vintage and Lolita/Victorian Goth fashion at the time) and thought about how people who dress alternatively sometimes are treated differently due to how they look, and the thought of getting over obstacles to be accepted or treated like a human being was an idea that hit home for me, so Across Lots seemed perfect. Now, society is a bit more open minded to alternative looking people which is wonderful!
The Pieces
Each piece is designed and handmade by myself. Some pieces are made with new, vintage/antique, or repurposed materials. Most pieces are one of a kind.
I hope you’re able to find your new favorite hat or hair accessory here! :)
