Frequently asked questions
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FLY PATTERNS?
My favorite fly patterns are Salmon, Steelhead, Spey and Trout streamers. I just like the colors and styles and all the different materials used to make these beautiful flies. I particularly like the old patterns from the 1800 and 1900 hundreds. I am also an old diehard bass and pan fish guy who still likes to tie frog, terrestrial and popper patterns.
WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE FOR YOUR FLIES?
The materials are endless for tying flies. From all the synthetic tinsels, flash materials, chenille’s, flosses, threads and foams to all the natural materials of feathers, furs, and wools there is a never ending supply! I also like to figure out a use for everyday items around the house to use like shoe laces, plastic bags, Christmas decorations, lint, rubber bands etc. etc.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TYING FLIES?
I have been tying flies on a regular basis for about six years. Prior to that I tied flies for myself since I was twelve years old and fishing with my Dad. I used old corks carved with my trusty Old Timer pocket knife, or maybe a left over piece of balsa from a long since crashed model airplane. I picked up feathers found in the back yard from some unfortunate bird who fell prey to the neighbor’s cat, or raided my mother’s sewing basket. My first bobbin was handmade from a slender piece of copper tubing bent to hold a sewing thread spool. Nothing gives me more pleasure than casting out a fly I made and tricking a trout, bass or bluegill into thinking its food.
DO YOU MAKE OTHER HANDMADE ITEMS?
I tie flies on safety pins for hats or lapels. The ladies particularly like the dragon flies with colorful bodies and lacey wings. The guys like to put them on their hats. I also make ladies earrings with combinations of feathers layered together. The favorites seem to be the ones with the small Peacock Eyes combined with Lady Amherst or Golden Pheasant Feathers.
RATE THE QUALITY OF YOUR FLIES AND LURES
The quality of my flies and lures is very high and I take pride in attention to details and quality of materials I use. I always strive to turn out the best work I can.
